Classic Wedding Traditions

There are many classic wedding traditions that date back many, many years. Here are just a few that people think of when planning a traditional wedding.

Tradition: The White Dress

A white wedding dress is one of the most recognizable traditions for bridal wear. This goes all the way back to the 1800s. Fabrics and silhouettes have definitely evolved throughout the years. Not everyone wants to be in a traditional white wedding dress.

Some might want to wear something more vibrant that matches their personality. You can also accessorize your white gown in a different way. For a Boho look, ditch the lace veil for a flower crown, heels for boots, and add a denim jacket.

Tradition: Being Given Away at the Aisle

The father-daughter walk down the aisle dates back to a time when a bride was technically being handed over as “property”. Times have changed and this symbolizes the sweet relationship between father and daughter. Walking down the aisle can make a bride a little nervous, so having your dad by your side might ease those jitters!

Tradition: Gift-giving

Traditionally, gift-giving was about helping the newlyweds prepare for married life with presents for their new home. These can be kitchen items, linens, etc. Many guests still get excited about gifting the newlyweds. Nowadays, maybe brides and grooms already have these things in possession.

If you prefer not to have gifts, there are other things that your guests can give you. Wishing well donations and honeymoon funds are always good too. This way you can decide later what you want to use it for. Some people might even want to give back and ask for charity donations.

Tradition: The Bouquet Toss

The bouquet toss is a very iconic tradition. It is meant to be good luck for the catcher of the bouquet. They are believed to be next in line to tie the knot. This a fun way to kick off the evening before getting to the dance floor.

If you think this is too much pressure for your single friends, you could also consider gifting it to another couple. Maybe someone who has been together a long time, such as grandparents. You could also present a flower from your bouquet to each special woman in your life.

No one is required to stick to these, but it’s nice to know what they are in case you want to stick to tradition. Chances are, these are things prior generations of your family did before. It’s your day, do what feels right to you!
